Mist covers the ground, a dead tree stands in a corner, and a man and woman stand on opposite sides of the reels. The 3D design of the graphics only makes it more immersive. If it wasn’t for the traditional La Catrina face paint and outfits, you might think this was solely a ghostly slot. 

However, there’s another feature that gives away the theme. In contrast to the dark and hair-raising graphics, the sound is cheerful. It’s traditional Día de los Muertos instrumentals, giving the gameplay an atmosphere of levity. Due to this, I really enjoyed playing it at new casinos.

It’s all juxtaposed by the slight sound effects in the background of a night scene and unearthly noises. Occasionally, a skeleton covered in a veil hovers in the left corner. The woman occasionally chuckles and gives you a thumbs up with wins, while the man sometimes cheers as he jumps and strums his guitar.

A New Play on a Well-Known Slot Theme

This slot follows the theme of Day of the Dead but with a spooktacular twist. If you spin the reels, then you won’t find bright colours and decorations. Instead of the festivities and fun traditions, it focuses on the dead. 

In fact, Los Muertos means The Dead in Spanish, so I’m not surprised by the graphics. Día de los Muertos has a long history in Mexican culture. It is a day on which families welcome and honour the souls of their deceased family members. 

While this is usually a celebration, this slot feels more like something you would find in a Tim Burton movie like Corpse Bride. Still, I liked the theme, as it felt like a mixture between Día de los Muertos and Halloween, combining the festivities with horror elements.
