How I placed my first bet on Larry the Leprechaun

After hearing about the award and all the features, I was ready to follow Larry into that green glade and start looking for treasure. If you’re ready to pick a four-leaf clover, read how I found a place to play and started spinning the reels.

1. I picked out a reputable casino that met all my needs. I checked the payment options, promotions, game library, and mobile app before making my choice.

Yes, it makes a wonderful first impression. If I’m honest, most of the credit goes to Larry, who was there to explain the game to me from the beginning. His wonky hat and shaggy ginger beard add to his persona as a lovable rogue. However, the overall design and the strong theme certainly won me over, too.

Gold and green

The luscious green background and the hints of gold are enough to conjure up a connection to Ireland. The natural setting is enhanced by several small details, which I loved noticing while I was playing. Leaves fall, ladybirds land, and clover sprouts before the bonus rounds begin.

The animations are the highlight of the game design. Larry reads his book by the reels, smokes his pipe, tips his hat, and jumps up when a win lands. I liked the cheerful but slightly haunting Irish tune playing. Plus, Larry laughed, sneezed, yawned, and applauded while I was playing, which added some life to the slot. 

Fabulous folklore

One of the most impressive aspects of the game is how Irish folklore is woven through every element. I saw ancient stone pillars, Celtic knots, four-leaf clovers, rainbows and pots of gold. Even the low-paying card symbols looked great and fitted the theme. 

Of course, there’s the Leprechaun himself and all of his belongings, including the tall green hat, pipe, foamy beer, and an ancient book. The story of the slot sticks to folklore, and in the bonus round, Larry leads us to his secret stash of treasure. There’s plenty of mischief along the way, too, which is just what I expected.

Bountiful bonus features

My favourite thing about this online slot is that it’s packed with features. If you think I’m just talking about the bonus rounds, that’s not the case. The base game has features, too. Plus, the action there is crucial to triggering the special rounds.

Larry is the Wild, who substitutes for all paying symbols. He can stand in for the silver and gold coins, but he won’t fill in spaces in the bonus tables. The other exciting action in the base game comes from the block feature. If a winning combination or several matching symbols land, they automatically get locked in and stay on the reels.

You spin again as a regular spin, but the ‘blocked’ symbols stay where they are. The feature helped me see more wins and build on existing wins. I found that I could add and change blocked symbols after a spin by clicking on that section of the reels.

The two top-paying symbols are silver and gold coins. When they land, they fill out their corresponding positions in the two bonus tables beside the reels. Magic sacks also land and take some of those coins from the tables but then fill out their own position in a separate bonus table. Check out my screenshots to see the three tables.

Once my table of silver coins had every position full, the Free Spins mode was ready to launch. I needed to see five silver coins land to act as the final trigger, and the block feature came in handy there. I was then taken to a separate screen, and each of my silver coins counted as a Free Spin, 16 in total. The block feature still applies, but only with an automatic lock, so I couldn’t change the blocked symbols.

The Leprechaun Spins work in a similar way; it was only the table of gold coins that triggered my bonus round. In Larry’s room of treasure, the reels behave differently. Each of the 16 coins triggered a spin, but the payout only came from the Wilds at the end. The Wilds locked in place whenever they landed, so I had a pretty decent win by the end.

The Magic Sack bonus triggers after the corresponding table is filled with eight sacks. I then needed one more sack to land to start the eight special spins. Larry’s book comes out and picks a low-value symbol. For me, it was K, so every time one landed on the reels, it turned into a Wild. The Wilds locked into place but didn’t interact with the other symbols, as I got a payout for all the Wilds at the end of the round.

Larry the Leprechaun RTP

While I got a good sense of the game from playing it, I also checked the rules and documentation to find out more. If a slot’s RTP is low, it can put me off, as I know there are better options out there. Fortunately, for this game, the RTP is 96.47%, which is on the decent side of average.

I was also happy with the pace of the slot. That comes from the low to medium volatility, which is the sweet spot for me. I didn’t have to wait too long for a win, and they varied enough in size to be actual wins and not just break even.

Why Is Larry the Leprechaun a hit?

Larry the Leprechaun is a hit because it takes a much-loved theme and adds tons of action and features. If you’re looking for an immersive slot, this is one of my favourites. The attention to detail in the design and hints of folklore grab your attention. Not forgetting the charming Larry, who adds to the appeal.

It’s the way the game builds up to the different features that kept me engaged. Seeing the bonus tables fill up added to the fun and made me want to keep spinning. While I love that the game can do that, I strongly recommend setting session and betting limits and sticking to them.
