I must be honest and say that pirate-themed online slot games aren’t often my go-to titles. Most of the time, they all follow the same sort of design and game structure, and they bring very similar special features. So, with that in mind, I can’t say I was so enthralled about playing Captain Bones: Big Bounty. 

Of course, my opinion changed once I had loaded it up and started playing. There is more than I expected to enjoy about my time spinning the reels on the slot.

Bringing the adventure to life

Being a pirate onboard a ship sailing the seas brings imagery of excitement and thrills to mind. That certainly sprung out to me when I began playing this Games Global slot. The background depicts the water that you must sail across to reach the lost treasure, with violent waves crashing up against the rocks. The skies look cloudy in the distance, giving the idea that a storm could soon hit. It conjures up adventurous ideas in the mind – something which sits well with the theme of the game.

As you spin the reels of Captain Bones: Big Bounty, you won’t hear anything overly dramatic in terms of the soundtrack. Instead, it plays simple jingles when symbols land and the sound of seagulls can also be heard playing out. It makes for a calming set of tones against the dramatic backdrop of the seascape.

Gameplay and mechanics

As with any slot machine game, the first step is to decide on a bet per spin. Considering your bankroll along with numerous other factors as well, you need to click on the button with the stack of coins image on it. That displays the slot’s betting menu, which in this case runs from €0.20 per spin to a maximum of €45 per spin.

Upon choosing your bet, you will be returned to the game screen and can start spinning the six reels. To do this, you click on the large circular button with the arrow on it, found on the right of the reels. Once a result lands, you will instantly see if you have formed a win. Combinations need to start from the leftmost reel of the game, and matching symbols need to appear anywhere on adjacent reels. There are 4,096 ways to win in Captain Bones: Big Bounty as a result.

If you want, you can play the game in autoplay mode, with the button at the top of the spin button. This function allows you to spin the reels up to 100 consecutive times at the same wager level. You can also introduce quicker spin results by clicking on the button shaped like a lightning bolt.

Captain Bones’ bonus games

There is a lot more to enjoy about this slot beyond its base game. A wild symbol can land on the reels, represented by the gold ‘W’. This one can substitute for all symbols except for scatters, coins, keys, cash and jackpots. 

The word ‘BOUNTY’ is spelt out by the slot’s scatter symbols, and if you manage to spell this out across the reels, you trigger free spins. A win between 10x and 50x your bet in this round is considered a Big Bounty win. Free spins continue playing out until a win matches or exceeds the bounty.

During free spins, you can collect key symbols, which unlock reels 5, 4 and 3, respectively. A left-to-right chain of cash symbols collects adjacent jackpots on the unlocked reels.

There is a Cash Collect function involved in the slot, which sees cash prizes from left to right collected. These can feature rewards of up to 10x each.

A Plunder Party may randomly activate in the slot, with multiple cash symbols landing anywhere on the reels.

Before you start spinning the reels of Captain Bones: Big Bounty, you need to consider the slot’s RTP rate. This sits at 96.24%, which is above the general average for video slots today. The RTP rate can highlight how much you can expect to win back from playing a slot, although you need to remember this is worked out over time.

There is a maximum payout of 5,500x your bet available in the slot, too. This lingers around the average maximum win for video slots. However, you should also remember that the game is a medium volatility release, which means wins will hit at an average pace and will provide average-level payouts as well.

Big Bounty on mobile

When I opened Captain Bones Bit Bounty on my Android smartphone, I found that the graphics translated well to a mobile display. The layout was also decently optimized, with the controls sitting at the bottom of the screen and the reels taking roughly half of the screen.

The jackpot symbols and giant animated treasure chest occupying the top of the screen felt poorly laid out, however, and made the screen seem a little too confusing for my liking. 

Overall I couldn’t really separate my mobile and desktop experiences as you’ll get a good representation of what the game is about regardless of the device you play on.
